  • Operating System - Support Information
    12/17/2008 - 09:38pm to 01/23/2009 - 10:58am

Microsoft has released an important security update for Internet Explorer 5 or later on Windows XP and Server 2003 machines.  This update closes a critical vulnerability that can allow unauthorized access to your computer.  Those that have Windows Automatic Update turned on (default/recommended) need do nothing; you will receive this update automatically.  If you believe you may not have Automatic Update turned on - even if you do not use Internet Explorer as your default web browser - please follow the instructions below.

You can read more about this vulnerability at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960714

    Update Installation Instructions

    1. On your computer, launch Internet Explorer

    2. Click this link - http://www.microsoft.com/protect/updates/bulletins/200812_oob.mspx   (If you're not currently using Internet Explorer, you should copy and paste this link into Internet Explorer.)

    3. Under the section 'Skip the Details', click the link that reads 'Microsoft Update Web site'

    4. If prompted, click the box that appears at the top of Internet Explorer to allow the Microsoft Update ActiveX plug-in to run

    5. Click the link to install Express Updates.  (This should take less than 10 minutes, but might take longer depending on when you last updated your computer)

    6. If prompted to restart your computer, please save your work and restart.

If you have any questions, please contact your local or departmental IT support provider.   The CUIT Helpdesk can be reached, at askcuit@columbia.edu or 212-854-1919.

  • Email - Cyrus
    12/17/2008 - 11:27am to 12/17/2008 - 11:39am

One of the Cyrus mail servers experienced intermittent failures this morning between 9:37AM and 10:15AM. Approximately 4000 customers are on that server and were potentially affected. Symptoms included: failure to download messages via mail clients such as Outlook and Thunderbird and inability to login via Cubmail. These problems did not affect the customers impacted by the mail outage last week.

The problem was corrected and the system administrators are closely monitoring the affected server.

    12/16/2008 - 09:19am to 12/16/2008 - 07:00pm

The mail server affected by the outage is still responding slowly. At this time customers' mailboxes can be access via Cubmail and mail clients such as Outlook and Thunderbird.

We expect the server's response times to degrade today bet 10AM - 12PM and again between 5PM - 7PM. Some mail client customers may see "connection time out" errors during those hours. At other times customers will see improved response times from the server.

The system administrators continue to work to stabilize the affected server. We apologize for this inconvenience and regret the impact of this outage for our affected customers.

UPDATE 12/16/2008 - 12:25PM:  All work related to the email servers has been completed and CUIT expects no more delays in email access or delivery.

    12/15/2008 - 04:20pm to 12/16/2008 - 12:21pm

The Cyrus email server affected by the outage was temporarily taken out of service today at 2:30PM.

The server was brought back online at 4:10PM. Customers are now be able to access their mailboxes via Cubmail or email clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird.

We apologize for this inconvenience and regret the impact of this outage for our affected customers.
