    CUIT will be replacing faulty equipment at 542 W 112 St on 10/29 between 11:00am and 11:30am. Users on the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors will experience loss of network connectivity during this time.

    CUIT apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause, but this action is necessary to ensure a more reliable service.  If clients continue to experience issues after the service-interruption hours, please contact the CUIT Helpdesk at:

    Some of the SMTP hosts are out of service because they are giving
    errors:

    3 of 8 externalsmtp hosts.  This pool handles incoming mail to columbia.edu.

    1 of 3 internalsmtp hosts.  These send mail originating on CUIT systems and mail sent to smtp server send.columbia.edu.

    The impact of this outage is possible delays in mail delivery.

     

    Update 10/29/2008 at 1:05pm:

    All servers sending mail to other Columbia email addresses are restored.    The 3 of 8 servers sending mail outside of Columbia that are affected are likely to continue being affected until late afternoon.  No mail is lost, but may experience a delay in their transmission.

     

    Update 10/30/2008 at 9:26am:

    The three externalsmtp hosts had their operating system re-installed and tested, and were put back online at about 4:30 am today.

    Two of the eight hosts in our externalsmtp pool are out of service with hardware failures.

    This pool handles incoming mail to columbia.edu.  At this time the other six are handling more messages than normal but running OK.

    Impact:

    1. Messages queued for re-try on those two hosts are not being re-tried now.  They will be re-tried once the hosts are running again.  Queued mail on these hosts is mostly mail from outside being forwarded by our users to addresses outside.

    2. The six hosts in service might hit their configured load limits for short periods of time (usually 15 or 30 seconds) and if that happens it would cause somewhat random delays in delivery.

     

    Update 10/28/2008 at 12:40pm:

    One of the two hosts is now in service.

     

    Update 10/28/2008 at 3:48pm:

    Both of these hosts are now back in service.
