Followup to service alert of 12/15.

We are pleased to say that availability on the incoming mail server was up to 99.8% yesterday following the addition of a tenth server and temporary block on the mail flood from icpbounce.com.

Mail from icpbounce.com was allowed last night 9pm to 5am, so that pending messages from there could be delivered. It is temporarily blocked again during the day today.

Work on the replacement system continues. Our goal is 100% availability.

    12/15/2014 - 11:14am to 12/15/2014 - 03:00pm

Incoming mail was disrupted 09:15-09:30 when a mailing company called icpbounce.com sent us 16,000 separate messages from 75 servers in the course of 10 minutes. During the disruption many outside mail systems would have had to queue mail for re-try. By now that mail will have been delivered. Further mail from icpbounce.com will be given a temporary fail for the time being.

This also prevented some scanners on campus from sending to mx.columbia.edu during that same time.

Other news about the incoming mail gateway. We have added a tenth old server to the existing pool to increase capacity. Simultaneously we are progressing well on a fast-track project to move the entire pool to newer hardware.
